LATEST DECISIONS OF THE FIA WORLD MOTOR SPORT COUNCIL CONCERNING KARTING

At its meeting on 8 March 2011 in Paris and on proposals of the International Karting Commission Members, the FIA World Motor Sport Council took in particular the following decisions concerning Karting:

2011 CIK-FIA «U18» World Karting Championship and CIK-FIA Academy Trophy

The point scoring systems for the CIK-FIA U18 World Karting Championship and CIK-FIA Academy Trophy have been amended to encourage Drivers to participate in the whole series still with a chance to have a good place in the final classification of the Championship if they had a poor result in the first of the three Events.

In the U18 World Championship, points will be allocated to the 34 Drivers qualified for the Final (except those who did not take the start or were excluded), according to the following scale: 50-45-41-38-36-35-34-33-32-31-30-29-28-27-26-25-24-23-22-21-20-19-18-17-16-15-14-13-12-11-10-9-8-7.

Additional points, from 6 to 1, will also be allocated to the top 6 classified Drivers in the consolation event called the “B” Final, reserved for Drivers classified between the 35th and 68th places after the qualifying heats.

An initial point allocation will take place after the qualifying heats on the basis of the standard scale for the top 15 classified Drivers of the intermediate classification (25-20-16-13-11-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1).

The top 40 classified Drivers in the Academy Trophy will also be rewarded. In 2011, the number of participants will be increased from 34 to 51. After having qualified in the heats, 28 Drivers will participate in the two-part final phase: Race 1 and Race 2. After each race, points will be allocated according to the new scale: 50-45-41-38-36-35-34-33-32-31-30-29-28-27-26-25-24-23-22-21-20-19-18-17-16-15-14-13.

The 23 Drivers having failed to qualify further to the heats will be invited to participate in a consolation event on the Sunday afternoon, the first 12 classified Drivers scoring a few points (from 12 to 1).

As a reminder, entries for the U18 World Championship will be limited to 102. They will open from Friday 1st April (via www.cikfia.com). The entry fee now includes the renting of the standardised paddock structure (3x4.5m per Driver) preinstalled by the CIK-FIA. Engines and tyres will be supplied on a free basis to all Drivers. When the latter enter, they will only have to choose amongst the 15 entered chassis makes the one with which they wish to compete.

Entries for the Academy Trophy will also be open from 1st April. A place amongst the 51 available will be granted per country. It is up to each ASN to select the Driver who will represent it.

2011 CIK-FIA World Karting Championship (KF1)

To strengthen the impact of the opening round of the 2011 CIK-FIA Karting World Championship in Suzuka (JPN), an additional 20 Drivers from the Asia-Pacific region will be allowed to participate in the first Event. An entry session will be open for this purpose on Friday 1st April (via www.cikfia.com/web/karting/webkarting.nsf/entryforms?openview). Taking into account these extra participants (54 in total), the programme of the first Event of the World KF1 Championship will exceptionally include qualifying heats and so an additional set of tyres will be allocated to each participant.

The minimum weight of KF1 karts (Driver included) is reduced from 160 to 158 kg.

Homologation Regulations

As from the next chassis homologation session the limitation to 4 in the number of makes that can be homologated by one and the same Manufacturer will be deleted.

The possibility to use hand-controlled front brakes in KF1 and KF2 is extended by 3 years, until 31 December 2014.

«ClasCIK» Karting

In order that ASNs can monitor and supervise the organisation, formatting and safety of historic Karting Events, new Guidelines have been introduced for single-kart parades, multi-kart demonstrations and regularity competitions. Karts will be divided into four “ClasCIK” categories according to their age, with further sub-divisions depending on the type of transmission and engine capacity. The Guidelines also include safety prescriptions for karts and equipment, as well as a minimum age for eligible Drivers according to the engine capacity of the kart.
